DJ Spinnerty sent this track my way about a year ago and told me to remix it if i was bored. I must have been because I remixed it that evening. I was going to post it at that time, but he said to hold off because he was working on a proper release. Fast forward one year and the release is out! My remix didn’t make the cut, but here it is anyway. It starts off quiet, be patient and just listen.

To celebrate the new decade we are releasing DRT YRT’s newest album Tripel. 9 tracks recorded in the Stable in Mendocino, CA and at the Stude in San Francisco, CA in September 2009. Months of mixing and editing done at the end of the year.

I had an 808 in the studio a few weeks ago for a couple of days and used it on this track. I also got a new Fender Deluxe Reverb amplifier for the studio as well. I ran our Wurlitzer 200 through the Fender with the reverb cranked up. Marty thought this track would be good if someone dropped a verse over it, we’ll see.

Recording in Mendocino over 4th of July

Over the 4th of July weekend we headed up to Mendocino, CA with Martin to do DRT YRT Record #2. It was overcast, misty and actually rained once or twice (kinda weird for the summertime in Northern California). This weather was perfect to hole ourselves up in the barn and record an album. As with the last DRT YRT record we set out to record as many tunes as we could while we were up in Mendocino property. After recording in Mendo, we mix the music back in San Francisco and then release the MP3s for free. Usually this process takes only a couple weeks to finish a record, most of the music is improvised and then edited either during the recording process or back in The City during the mixing stage. We make more beats and music than we actually need in the end. It is highly satisfying to have an album finished so quickly.

Similar to the first DRT YRT album, the artwork is a collage of photographs from the sessions in Mendocino. Martin took all the pictures this time around with his Canon DSLR and fixed focus lens. Currently we’re mixing the music…we are almost finished. I’m going to try and post the link to download the album this weekend.

We’re kicking around the title Sounds From Unknown Animals. Saturday night there was a loud animal on the property that was making some very strange noises, kind of like a long cough but with a lot of force. Its hard to explain. Now we were a little scared, but it was nothing like this. Martin was up on the property a few weeks prior and heard the same thing while sitting on the roof. I was trying to turn off all the lights in the barn at the end of the night and kept hearing the noise and got a little freaked out when everyone ran back inside leaving me out there alone with the animal. So thats the inspiration for the title of the album.

Commitment-wise (see: unemployment) its looking like we will have some free time this Fall, so DRT YRT record #3 could be right around the corner.

Demsuite.com was having some wordpress / database issues for the past week and I finally got around to fixing them. Hooray! I’ve had a inspired week of productivity in the studio interestingly coinciding with some mild depression which seemed fuel my creativity in the studio.

We’ve come along way on our next record and I really hope to have it finished by the end of the year (?). Right now we thinking about making the entire album in mp3 format available for free. We don’t have the money right now to press cds or vinyl or anything. Elliott wants some vinyl pressed, but I think that we should put it out there first and see where it goes. Speaking of free mp3s, I’m going to be posting the mp3s from, Breath and Pages our first album from 2007 here soon, so stay up! I’m gonna post some other zips of stuff we’ve worked on as well in the near future.

Finally, I’ve got to get the site of Trazmick Recordings (trazmickrecordings.com) up and functioning so peeps can order physical copies of the catalog (cd, 45s, etc.). The label has been mired in internet purgatory for too long now. Blame it on the recession.

an ambient piece using rjdj

i used the iphone app, rjdj, to record the morning city sounds during my walk from the bus to my office in soma. towards the second half of the piece i spent some time in the elevator – where you can hear people’s morning conversations and a lot of interesting tones coming from the elevator each time we stop on a different floor on the way up.

i brought the rjdj mp3 into ableton to add some mellow synths over the top.

Dem Suite started rehearsing again this week. We got 6 or 7 new live tunes and a whole new setup with lots of new equipment. its sounding really good and I am excited to start playing some of this material live.
