Repairing our Wurlitzer 200

A couple years ago we decided, as we were sitting at a mexican restaurant, that we needed a 60’s Wurlitzer electric piano as part of “our sound”. So we found one on craigslist in nice shape and we used it on our first record and EPs. Then unfortunately, out of nowhere it really started to HUM. It hummed so loud we could not longer use it. After a year or so of it sitting in our studio collecting dust on the side, I decided to do some research into the problem and I came across VintageVibe.com, a repair shop based in New Jersey. They specialize in vintage keyboard repair, namely old Rhodes and Wurlitzers. They also make replacement parts and for these old beauties. In particular they make a Wurlitzer electric piano reed bar shield that eliminates the exact hum we were experiencing. They even post videos on how to fix various problems that are common with these old electromechanical pianos. So I watched a few youtube videos and ordered the shield bar, after a day or two of ripping apart our wurli and installing the shields over the pickups our wurli was good as new! We’ve recorded lots of great sounds with it since. Its great to have her back. I will post some tracks soon. Its likely that most the tracks we release will probably have this wurli somewhere in the mix.
